More than half of all greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings and there is a global movement toward mandating that buildings be built to higher energy efficiency standards as a vital way to fight climate change and as an opportunity to achieve large reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Passive House is a relatively new standard, originating in Germany in the 1990s, but it has started to ramp up here in the US over the last few years. Various recently completed projects, such as The House at Cornell Tech dormitories at Roosevelt Island in New York, have shown that these buildings consistently perform as they are designed, and result in heating and cooling savings of between 75-90% compared to regular construction.
